County Waltz 2015

The County Waltz took place on Monday 20th April at Wollaton Park Golf Club. It was glorious weather and everyone enjoyed the course which was in excellent condition and then were well looked after by the bar and catering staff.

A full field of 31 teams (93 competitors) took part, representing 13 clubs.
In first place with 78 points was the team from Notts Ladies of Carol Wild, Sharon Coyne and Janet Slater. Closely following in second place with 77 points was the team from Stanton on the Wolds of Louise Spray, Helena McCannah and Sarah Hernon. In third place with 73 points was the team of Colette Newton and Anne Harris both from Notts Ladies and Audrey Blelock from Wollaton Park.

The competition is held to raise funds to support the 1st and 2nd teams. It is especially important this year as the 1st team is away at Enville in Staffordshire for 6 days (June 28th to 3rd July) playing the other 5 counties from the Midlands North Region.
Overall a fantastic total of £1445 was raised for the funds. This included £254 from a bottle raffle –thank you for the generous support of this. Special thanks must go to the Wollaton Park members for their courtesy of the course and to their Lady Captain Fran Tunnicliffe who presented the prizes to the winners. Also a big thank you to everyone who contributed to the organisation and overall running of the competition.

Lauren to help inspire women & girl golfers

LaurenEGEngland Golf has launched a drive to attract more women and girls to play the game and join golf clubs. It's being led by Nottinghamshire's Lauren Spray, the new Women and Girls' Participation Manager, who is herself a keen golfer and huge enthusiast for the game.

"There are so many reasons to play golf," said Lauren. "There are lots of health and fitness benefits, it's something you can do with family and friends and you can enjoy the great outdoors on hundreds of different courses across the country."

The England Golf Strategic Plan 2014-17 aims to increase participation and club membership and it highlights the current state of the women's game, showing that only 15 cent of the membership is female. This is in contrast to the average in Europe where women and girls make up around 30 per cent of club membership. In addition, latest participation figures from Sport England show that 113,300 women and girls are regular, once-a-week golfers, compared with almost 600,000 men.

England Golf will support clubs to attract more women into the game with targeted programme to grow female participation and membership, which will be launched in 2015. Guidance on good practice will also be available to clubs. Support for junior girls will also form part of England Golf's Club Junior Offer. Details will be available soon on the England Golf website.

Match v Sheffield Union 2015

The customary fourball match against the Sheffield & District Ladies Association took place on Thursday 9th April 2015, away at The Chesterfield Golf Club, Walton. The weather was glorious and the course was in excellent condition having recovered from the recent closure due to the heavy rain. The match was played with the usual friendly, competitive spirit and there was some good golf by both sides. I am proud of my team even though we lost the match by 4 games to 1. The match was played off scratch and our opponents fielded a strong side with handicaps ranging from +1 to 7 which meant most of our players would have received shots in a handicap competition.

In the top match Carol Wild and Caron Harrison went to the 18th where Carol narrowly missed a tricky downhill putt for a half. In the next match Chris Hargreaves and Jane Fowler took their opponents to the 17th. Then congratulations go to Laura Morris and Carol Houghton in the third match for achieving our only point with an impressive 6/5 win. In the next two matches Glenys Priestley and Helen Maber, and Pam Loch and myself, took our opponents to the 16th and 17th respectively.

It is a special year for the Sheffield & District Association as they celebrate 50 years since their foundation. At the meal afterwards their committee presented the players with souvenir pens to mark the occasion. We wish them well for this anniversary year and look forward to future fixtures with them.

Thank you to all my players for your support and valiant efforts.
Kathryn Horberry (County Captain)

Tasker's Trophy will help fund Juniors

The organising committee of the Tasker's Trophy competition have awarded £910 to the NCLGA Junior Section, to be used for the furtherment of junior golf at grass roots level in our county.

The funding is proportional to the number of teams entered from NCLGA clubs into their Interclub competition. This year 19 teams entered from Nottinghamshire and they would love to see all of them back next year, and hopefully even more teams will join them.

Entry to the competition will open later this month so if you could encourage your Senior Ladies to enter then you could be helping further junior golf even more next year.
