Festival of Golf 2023
On 15th August, a sunny day at Branston Golf Club, 16 players from Nottinghamshire arrived to compete for final places in the Scratch and Handicap leagues and the 9-hole competitions. 109 girls were competing from the 6 counties in the Midland North Region, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire. The Scratch team started the day level with Shropshire both counties playing for 1st place, with the handicap team playing for 5th or 6th place. Nottinghamshire were also keen to contest the 9-hole team event.
The 9-hole players on the Eagle course were divided into two groups, Sancha Evison, Lois Evison and Emily Wood played in the handicap competition off the red tees and Darcy Swift, Tilly Hardy and Kara Bradley in the shortened course non-handicap competition. The 9-hole team competition was to be hotly contested with over 50 entrants and the trophy would go to the county who had the best non-handicap gross score, minus the best handicap players stableford score. Our team put in a fantastic showing in both the events and the winners of the team trophy were Nottinghamshire. Congratulations team, this is the first time we have won this trophy! Sancha Evison won the Runner-up prize in the handicap competition and Kara Bradley was the runner-up in the non-handicap competition. Excellent performances by everyone.
The handicap team of Millie Browne, Amelia Hothersall, Amelia Nugent, Holly Wilson and Sofia Evison started from the 10th hole against an on-form Shropshire team, it was a close match with a lot of shots being given and received, but Shropshire edged the match with a 3:2 win. Congratulations to Amelia Hothersall and Sofia Evison on playing their first match for Nottinghamshire.
The scratch team of Lizzie Wilson, Millie Marsh, Amelia Hogg and the foursomes pairing of Maddison Clarke and Lexi Williams-Green knew that they had their work cut out. We were playing Staffordshire and we needed to win all four games to stand a chance of winning the overall title. If Staffordshire won all their games it would go down to games won and that would be very close. The team really pulled out the stops with a fantastic 4:0 win against Staffordshire, with some great winning margins in the individual games… and then the news began to filter in that Shropshire had halved one match. Congratulations Nottinghamshire, we took the Scratch league trophy for the 3rd year running – can we make it 4?
