Match v Midland Veteran Ladies' Golf Association 2015

MatchvNotts15bAn extra fixture was arranged this year for Notts ist Team to play a 4 ball scratch match against a team from the Midland Vets Ladies Golf Association. This took place at Sherwood Forest Golf Club on the 30th July 2015, primarily to give the vets team some sharp match practice before the jamboree there next week.

The weather was rather overcast with a light shower but this did not dampen the players' spirits. The course was in excellent condition and enjoyed by everyone. Some of our Notts players had defected to play for the opposition but I forgive them as they have the honour of representing the Midland Vets next week!

In the top game Emma Newlove and Maria Betts played a close fought game and came out top for Notts winning by 1 hole against the tough opposition of former professional and last year's England Vets Match Play Champion, and runner-up this year, Julie Brown and her partner Lindsey Shaw.

In the second game Jodie Peacock and Carol Houghton were beaten by this year's England Vets Match Play Champion, Helen Lowe and her partner Mary MacLaren. This levelled the match.

Summer & Veterans Meeting 2015

The County Summer and Veterans Meeting took place on Monday 13th July at Sherwood Forest Golf Club. It was rather disappointing weather with spells of rain throughout the day. However, the players enjoyed the excellent condition of the course and were refreshed by the bar and catering staff after their round. 59 competitors took part representing 14 clubs.

The best gross score of the day was a 79 recorded by Emma Howie of Stanton on the Wolds. The highlights of her round were birdies at the 1st and 10th holes and she completed the back 9 with a creditable 37 strokes. The best nett score of the day was a 71 by Wendy Kerry of Ruddington Grange playing off 11 handicap who is aiming to reach a single figure handicap. Best gross score amongst the veterans was 80 by Sue Penfold of Sherwood Forest and the best nett was a 74 by Jan Hooley of Stanton on the Wolds playing off 10 handicap. Maureen Clarke of Sherwood Forest produced the best nett score of the senior veterans with a 75 playing off 16 handicap. The difficult rain conditions resulted in the standard scratch score for the course being increased from 73 to 75.

Congratulations to the aforementioned players as they have won the following trophies:
Summer Meeting
Scratch Cup: E. Howie (Stanton on the Wolds) 79
Handicap Cup: W. Kerry (Ruddington Grange) 82-11=71

County Captain's Day 2015

This year the fund raising County Captain's Day event was again held at Coxmoor golf club and took place on 27th July 2015. We were fortunate with the weather as the rain that was forecast held off - unlike the previous day which saw heavy rain. The course was in excellent condition and had recovered from that bad weather. The format was an am-am teams of 4 Stableford with 2 scores to count on each hole. 40 teams took part with players from 17 clubs. The first tee tee-off time was 8.30 and it proved to be the early starters who set the pace for the prize winners.

The team from Beeston Fields of Helen Maber, Linda Alliott, Clare Jones, and Karen Palmer opened the event and returned an excellent score of 79 points. However they were soon overtaken by the next team out from The Nottinghamshire namely Aileen Kynoch, Bernie Barton, Steph O' Connell and Alison Harrold who returned an amazing score of 82 points.

This proved to be the winning score but was closely followed by a great score of 81 points which was returned near the end of the field by the team of Tina Gillott, Chris Hodges and Helen Lister all from Rushcliffe together with Janet Doleman from Trent Lock. This moved the Beeston Fields team into 3rd place. 4th place went to the team of Joyce Hayward, Marion Beeston and Angela Robinson all from Coxmoor and Gaynor Tunney from Sherwood Forest. They also returned a score of 79 and beat 3 more teams on that score by having the better back 9.

County Week 2015

winners2Massive congratulations to our successful first team who won the Midlands North County Week which took place this week at Enville Golf Club. Thank you so much to those who came to support and caddy in what was such excessively hot weather.

A fantastic win for the whole team, taking the trophy for the first time since 2000, and they now go on to play in the County Finals at Frilford Heath, from 14th - 18th September. Put a note in your diaries - your support would be invaluable and most welcome!

Now that County Captain, Kathryn, has had chance to recover from her champagne soaking, her report, photographs and full match results can be found on our County Week page.

Midlands North 'Queen of Clubs' 2015

It was the turn of Nottinghamshire to host the Queen of Clubs competition this year, for the Midlands North Region, which was played at Chilwell Manor Golf club on Friday 17th July. There was a field of 34 competitors, who were all club champions from their respective clubs in the 6 counties making up the Midland North region.
The weather was very pleasant, if just a little breezy, but just right for playing 36 holes of golf. The course at Chilwell received many compliments, (apart from some very difficult pin positions on some holes), and everyone was given a warm welcome by the staff and members.
Lady Captain Marylin Musson was there from the very beginning of the day, making sure that everything ran smoothly, and was still there at the end of the day for the presentation. Marion Price was kind enough to lend us her buggy for the day to enable the referee to get round the course, other ladies and the Gentlemens captain helped with starting duties and at the halfway house. The referees for the day were Maureen Clark and Joanna Smith, who were needed to give their advice in some tricky situations.
The winner of the Douglas Bowl was Helen Lowe from Scraptoft, with a gross score for the day of 148. The runner up, winning the salver, was Fern Clark from Brocton Hall with 158. Other winners of gross prizes were Debbie Deakin, Olivia Kelly, Sophie Johnson.
Sally Sparrow won the best nett of the day with 149, and other nett prize winners were Lorna Morris and Paula Drury.
Joan Underwood, the County President presented the prizes. Many thanks to all those taking part, to the staff and members at Chilwell, and the help given to me by our County Officials.

Mixed Am-Am 2015

As you are aware this competition is one where the girls raise funds for their own section by running the day. This year we moved it from April to July in the diary but it appears that this date change has proved difficult to secure entries and we have had to make the sad decision to cancel the date.

We have considered postponing to an alternative date later this year but finding an available date and course is proving difficult, so we are hoping to rearrange for next April instead and revert back to the usual date slot.

So thank you to all those girls and parents who were going to volunteer/donate raffle prizes etc., but you will get your chance to do that next year instead. Many thanks also to those teams who had already entered the competition; your entries and fees will be returned as soon as possible.

We must also thank Beeston Fields GC for offering to host the competition this year. Your support of the Junior Section is much appreciated.

Many thanks
Emma

Second Team Home Match v Leicestershire 2015

2ndvLeicH15Our first 2nd team home match of the season was played at Rushcliffe against Leicestershire on Sunday 19th July. The morning started with a couple of heavy showers but the players were not put off by the weather.

We made a good start in the morning foursomes with Andrea Stockdale and Sue Penfold winning the first match, followed by Carol Houghton and our rookie, Laura Abbott, from Oakmere. Her handicap has reduced from 10 to 7 recently and she looks a great prospect for future County golf. The final foursomes pairing of Carol Wild and Glenys Priestley achieved a fighting half on the 18th, going into lunch with a two and a half/half lead.
The course and opposition proved a little more challenging in the afternoon with Carol Houghton and Carol Wild coming in with two very convincing wins and two more points. The outcome being a well fought, halved match.

Our thanks to Rushcliffe Golf Club where we were well looked after and catered for.

Coronation Foursomes 2015

The Notts. County Ladies' Golf Association Coronation Foursomes Stableford took place at Oakmere Admirals Golf Club on Monday the 8th June 2015. The weather was fine with occasional sunshine – the showers held off for the competition but there was a testing wind. 28 pairs took part, representing 14 clubs. Foursomes are always a good test of golf and the course proved to be a tough challenge.

Congratulations to the winners ALISON HARROLD and BERNIE BARTON from The Nottinghamshire Golf Club who successfully defended their title with a score of 34 points. This score was just 1 point ahead of the runners-up place which went to J.ROWE and L.MORRIS also from The Nottinghamshire Golf Club, winning on the back 9 from myself KATHRYN HORBERRY representing Coxmoor Golf Club and MAUREEN CLARKE representing Sherwood Forest Golf Club.

It was a day to remember for Maureen and myself. Our front 9 score was boosted by the hole in one that I achieved on the par 3 8th hole. I might not have chosen to tee off on the even holes, but Maureen had to play with borrowed clubs after leaving hers in her husband's car and we thought she would not be used to the distances hit with the clubs in order to tackle the par 3 holes. Incidentally Maureen played very well with these clubs!
