Captain's Report on the County Finals

For the first time since the year 2000, our Nottinghamshire ladies first team came top of the Midlands North Region of counties in the inter county matches week competition which was played earlier at the Enville Golf Club. This qualified them to play in the all England finals against the winners from the other 5 regions, at the Frilford Heath (Green course), from September 13th to the 18th. The 6 counties competing against each other in scratch match play format (3 foursomes in the morning and 6 singles in the afternoon) were Nottinghamshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Gloucestershire, Lancashire and Sussex.

Notts 19405 275 275 1The event started with a practice round on the first day and the players had the challenge of playing a course which had been extended in length by using the men's tees on many holes. It was noted that there seemed to be rather a lot of bunkers on the course! Later in the evening there was the taking of the official photographs.

The players representing Nottinghamshire were:
Rachel Boulton (County Champion), Emily Cheshire, Vicki Forecast, Esme Hamilton, Carol Houghton, Emma Howie, Emily Lyle, Laura Morris, Emma Newlove, Glenys Priestley and Lauren Spray accompanied by the County President Joan Underwood, County Captain Kathryn Horberry, and County Vice-Captains Pam Loch and Helen Maber.

Ladies Interclub Final 2015

LadiesIC2015aThe final of the ladies interclub foursomes match play 2015 was between Chilwell Manor and Newark and was played over 18 holes at Coxmoor golf club on the 21st September. The weather was rather disappointing as the rain did not clear until well into the second half.
The teams were:
Chilwell Manor: Glenys Priestley (7) and Rita Munks (15), Maggie Elliott (12) and Julie Griffiths (12)
Newark: Julia Hatcher (5) and Sandie Pearson (13), Eva Glasby (8) and Jane Tucker (10)

The Chilwell Manor pairings both took early leads of 2 up after 6 holes. However, in the first match the Newark pair Julia Hatcher and Sandie Pearson fought back to finish all square against Glenys Priestley and Rita Munks.
But in the second match the Chilwell Manor pair Maggie Elliott and Julie Griffiths increased their lead over Eva Glasby and Jane Tucker to finish 6 holes up.

The accumulation of the results of the matches awarded the 2015 title to the Chilwell Manor ladies. Congratulations to them, they have much to celebrate as this in the first time Chilwell Manor have taken the trophy. Commiserations to the Newark ladies but they can take pride in reaching the final.

Thank you to the referees Joanna Smith and Val Peat, and to Coxmoor Golf Club for hosting the event on their excellent course. Thanks also to NCLGA President Joan Underwood for being the starter and presenting the prizes.

2nd Team Finals 2015 v Staffordshire

2ndFinals2The 2nd team county finals between the winners of the leagues of the two areas of the Midland North Region saw Nottinghamshire playing against Staffordshire. The event took place at the Cavendish golf course, Buxton on 28th August. The course is renowned for its beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
The weather could have been kinder as there was a strong blustery wind and several heavy showers, but it was sunnier towards the end of the afternoon. The greens proved tricky as they were rather fast and shaped so that the ball easily rolled off from approach shots.

Staffordshire were able to master these conditions earlier than Notts and took all 3 of the foursomes points from our pairings of Laura Morris and Glenys Priestley, Sarah Riddell and Kristina Lazarevic, and Andrea Stockdale and Sue Penfold. However Notts produced some excellent results in the afternoon singles and those 6 points were halved with 3 wins to each team.

Mixed Interclub Final 2015

The interclub final of the mixed foursomes match play 2015 was between Rushcliffe and The Nottinghamshire and was played over 36 holes at Newark golf club on the 20th September.
The teams were:
Rushcliffe: Matt Hogg (+3) and Jayne Barrs (13), Will Dobson (0) and Kim Robertson (12)
The Nottinghamshire: Dean Boule (3) and Carol Houghton (5), Chris Kearney (3) and Sue Reynolds (9)

Nottinghamshire win the English County Finals

Notts-champs 19425 275 275 1Nottinghamshire are the new English Women's County Champions, winning the title for the first time - with a match in hand.

The county triumphed when they won their fourth match of the week at County Finals and Buckinghamshire did them the favour of defeating challengers Lancashire. The team spent anxious moments in front of the scoreboard checking and rechecking points before erupting into cheers. Their captain Kathryn Horberry beamed broadly as she said: "It's absolutely fantastic!"

This is Nottinghamshire's first appearance at County Finals since 2000 - when Kathryn, an eight times county champion, was in the team. Her players have invited her to tee it up in tomorrow's final match against Essex but she has declined "I don't want headlines saying county captain loses 8/7," she laughed. She's also determined that her team goes all out for their fifth win of the week. "We will definitely be trying, we want to beat everyone," she said.

2nd Team Away Match v Leicestershire 2015

2ndvLeicsA15Our county second team match, away against Leicestershire, took place on Sunday 16th August.
The foursomes golf at Lingdale was some of the most exciting we've seen, in particular from our younger players, Sarah Riddell and rookie, Christina Lazarevic, who came back from 4 down to all square on the 18th tee. Sadly they lost the 18th but had put up such a good fight. Likewise Carol Wild and Glenys Priestley who halved on the 18th. Sue Penfold and Andrea Stockdale had a great 4 and 3 win, ending the morning all square. So the winners of the afternoon match would go through to the final v Staffs.

The afternoon was quite tense with Glenys getting an early win and Andrea losing to some exceptional golf. Sarah had a lovely round and won on 16, likewise Carol on 17, with Kristina getting an excellent birdie on 17 to seal the match. Notts. winning 5½ to 3½ and going through to the final at Cavendish on August 28th.

Well done to today's team and everyone who has represented the County 2nd team in the past four matches. Thank you for playing and good luck in the final. Thank you also to Helen Maber and Joan Underwood for your support at matches.

Autumn Meeting 2015

The County Autumn Meeting took place on Thursday 10th September at Norwood Park Golf Club. The weather was perfect, with warm sunshine throughout the day and the beautiful trees laden with fruit reminded us that it was the autumn season. 35 competitors took part representing 12 clubs. The course was in excellent condition and the tricky borrows on the greens were a challenge to the players. This was reflected in the competition scratch score for the day increasing to 73 from the norm of 72.

The best golf of the day and winner of the Scratch Challenge Bowl came from Bernie Barton of The Nottinghamshire with the lowest gross score of 83. Playing off a handicap of 14 this also enabled her to produce the lowest nett score of 69 and take the Handicap Challenge Bowl. Bernie was also awarded the Coronation Silver Medal for the lowest nett score in the silver division. Perhaps we need to alter a well known saying to "a little of what you don't know does you good!" as this was Bernie's first visit to the course.

The next best nett score of the day was an excellent nett 70 by Angela Picker of Ruddington Grange playing off a handicap of 17. The leading nett score in the bronze division and winner of the Coronation Bronze Medal came from Rachel Bryan of the Nottinghamshire with a nett 73 playing off a handicap of 24. These scores by Bernie (nett 69) and Rachel (nett 73), combined with those of fellow club members Helen Haycox (nett 75) and Julie Rose (nett 77) meant that, with a total nett of 294, The Nottinghamshire retained the Jubilee Shield for the leading club.

2nd Team Away Match v Lincolnshire 2015

2ndvLincsA15Nottinghamshire 2nd team played Lincolnshire away at Stoke Rochford on Tuesday 11th August.
We arrived at Stoke Rochford on a lovely warm day, where the course was dry and running. It proved a new and difficult challenge for some of our team who had not played there before.

The Lincs. team were on form and followed a 3-0 win in the foursomes with a 5-1 win in the singles. Our team fought hard but despite some excellent golf were beaten by a stronger side. Laura Abbott, playing only her second match for the County, held her own against the experience of their Captain, Helen and held her to all square after 9 holes, losing eventually 3 & 1. Laura Morris played some wonderful golf to win her match 8 & 7.

Well done to Glenys Priestley who was presented with her County colours.
