MNR Handicap Match v Leics 2017

2vLeics17aThe girls handicap team had their first match of the season at Beedles Lakes golf club on Sunday 7th May. They played Leicestershire girls on bright sunny day, enjoying a course that was new to all of them, however the number of trees played a factor in the matches on both sides!
Notts took an early lead then Leicestershire came back in the middle order before, Ankita Anand playing her first match, battled right to the end to halve her match on the final hole.

There are two more matches for the second team later this season.

MNR Scratch Matches - Round 2

Chevin2016Chevin golf club in Derbyshire on Monday 8th August was the venue for our girls scratch team to play their second round of league matches, in the morning against Leicestershire and in the afternoon against Lincolnshire.

None of the girls had played the course before but they were glad to have their electric trollies to climb the hills, fortunately it was a bright an relatively dry day so they could enjoy the views from the top of the course!

In the morning the girls won 4-2 which was a great result as the girls tried to plot their way around a course they had not seen before. They quickly worked out they had to keep the ball in play and aim for the high parts of the fairways.

In the afternoon, they continued their form and patience to bring home another win 4-2.

Special mention to Charlie Inger making her scratch team debut and Leonie Muir her county debut, having only just got her first handicap of 12 a few months earlier! The rookies won both their matches, well done. Charlotte Hazelwood also made her return to the team after being injured last season but went out and had a convincing win.

The prize winners were presented their prizes by the NCLGA President Mrs Maureen Clarke. They were:

In 2nd place with 78 pts: Colin Maber, Helen Maber, Cathy Burnside and Steve Burnside

The Junior Girls Captain Laura Abbott organised the running of the day with the assistance of Kristina Lazarevic, Charlie Inger, Esme Hamilton, Sharna Betteridge, Ankita Anand, and Rachael Green. The team of girls worked extremely hard running the desk, acting as starters, holding a putting competition, cleaning clubs and a raffle. Their efforts saw them raise over £350 in those activities alone. The whole day raised over £950 in funds for the girls, so a sincere thanks to all those who participated in the day, and the members and visitors at Springwater who also made donations. Our sincere thanks go to Springwater GC for agreeing to host the event , and keeping everyone fed and watered during day.
A final thank you to Helen Boulton for organising the competition entries and Helen Maber, County Captain, for facilitating the prize giving.

MNR Scratch Matches - Round 1

The girls had their first two scratch league matches at Birstall Golf club in Leicestershire in the May half-term week. The new format of the Midlands North League this year means that the girls play 2 matches in one day against two different opponents, on this occasion it was Staffordshire and Shropshire.

The day was challenging on the weather front with wind and rain showers most of the day, but the girls kept the smiles on their faces underneath their brollies.

In the morning the team won 4 1/2 - 1 1/2 against Shropshire. In the afternoon playing Staffordshire the matches were very close and the result came down to the last two putts in the last match, which unfortunately went one up to Staffordshire and they won the match 4-2.

Friendly Match v Mapperley 2017

Mapperley17aThursday 13th April saw the staging of the annual friendly fixture against Mapperley Ladies. The team, consisting of acting Captain Charlie Inger, Ankita Anand, Lucy Holbrough, Madeleine Smith, Safi Durant and Rebecca Oates, ran out 3-0 victors although the matches were much closer than the score lines suggest.

This match was one of the first many of the girls had played for the County, although any nerves were quickly forgotten following six fine drives on the first hole. The better ball format resulted in some great shots being played by both sides in a match played in good spirits. The girls all said how helpful the support, course management tips and matchplay advice given to them by Mapperley’s ladies was at this stage of their County careers.

Once again thanks go to the Mapperley Ladies for hosting this match and allowing the girls to gain valuable matchplay experience.

Midland North Girls Festival of Golf 2016

Festivalpreswinners16Monday 22nd August saw the inaugural "MNR Girls' Festival of Golf" take place at Trent Lock Golf club with 107 girls aged 6-18 take part in a variety of activities. The event was created by the Midlands North Region County Junior Organisers to provide an opportunity for girls in the 6 counties (Notts, Derbys, Shrops, Staffs, Lincs and Leics) to meet, play golf, have fun and be inspired.

The event incorporated the girls scratch and handicap league finals for the more experienced players and a 9 hole competition for girls who are up and coming or new to golf. In addition during the day we had skills workshops, a pirate golf challenge and a trick shot demo. The day finished with a meal and presentation of the prizes and trophies.

We had 22 girls from Nottinghamshire invited to attend the day, aged 6-18, five of which had only just started playing golf this year from through the Girls Golf Rocks project.
Our scratch team won their match on the day convincingly against Derbyshire 5-1 and were runners up in the league this year to Staffordshire, who had narrowly beaten us earlier in the season.
Our Handicap team won their match on the day 3-1 against Staffordshire and the team finished tied third in the league. Thank you to all the girls who have played for both the scratch and handicap teams over the season.
The 9 hole competition on the day was won by a team from Derbyshire, with Leicestershire runners up. Our girls did very well with Amelia Nugent having the best score from the white cones outside the winning teams.
