County Championships & Spring Meeting 2014

Champ14WinnersThe NCLGA County Championship and Spring Meeting took place at Beeston Fields Golf Club 16th-18th May, 2014.

Defending champion Alex Peters hit the first shot to open the Championship on a glorious sun drenched Friday morning. Some 24 players took part in the Championship playing 36 holes with the top 16 going through to the knock out stages over Saturday and Sunday. A similar number took part in a trial of the new format of the Spring Meeting playing 18 holes. The weather was wonderful and Beeston Fields GC was presented beautifully. Despite some tricky pin placements the scoring was excellent in both sections of the competition.

The matchplay stages started on Saturday morning with some good golf being played. In the first match out, Alex Peters v Lesley Morris, Alex had an ace at the third hole with a well struck 7 iron. The quarter finals followed Saturday afternoon with Alex Peters, Rachel Boulton, Emily Mae Hall and Lianna Bailey all going through to Sunday morning semi finals. The golf was a joy to watch with the ball striking being of excellent quality. The girls were making making short work of the Par 5's, but the course still provided a stern test for the players with a fair wind proving a test at times with some difficult pin placements.

So to Sunday afternoon with Alex Peters playing Lianna Bailey and what a feast we had on offer. Alex opened birdie, birdie to go immediately two up. This was followed by a birdie, birdie response on the next two holes from Lianna so the match was all square after four holes, all won with birdie golf. The golf settled down a little with Alex gaining wins at the long par 4, 6th, with a par and a further par at the 9th, where Lianna drove her ball into the trees and just failed to secure her par after trying to get up and down from short of the green. Holes continued to be halved in par until the 12th which Alex won by making par to Lianna's bogey. The players continued halving holes with Alex eventually running out the winner at the 16th hole, 3&2, to secure a hat-trick of wins.

The players selected to now go forward to represent the County at the Midlands North Region County Week to be held at The Leicestershire Golf Club, 9th – 13th June are (alphabetical order) Lianna Bailey, Rachel Boulton, Emma Howie, Rhiannon Linacre, Emma Newlove, Sophie Newlove, Jodie Peacock, Alex Peters and Lauren Spray.
During this week Notts. will play 36 holes a day (3 foursomes and 6 singles per day) against Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Shropshire and Staffordshire where the cream of midlands golf will be taking part.
