County Championships & Spring Meeting 2016

The Notts. County Ladies' Golf Association County Championship and Spring Meeting took place at Sherwood Forest Golf Club from the 13th – 15th May 2016. On a fine day with a cold northerly wind our defending champion, Rachel Boulton, was in the first pairing to tee off on Friday morning. Some 18 players took part in the Championship playing 36 holes with the top 8 going through to the knock out stages over Saturday and Sunday.

Esme Hamilton returned a score of 79 in the morning and an even better gross score of 73 in the afternoon. Unfortunately, due to exam commitments, she was not available to play in the knock out match play. Lauren Spray was runner up with scores of 76 and 79. 21 additional players took part in the 18 holes Spring Meeting medal played alongside the morning round of the Championship qualifying stage.

The course was presented beautifully and in excellent condition. Despite the wind and some tricky pin placements there were some very good scores. Kristina Lazarevic had the best nett score of the morning with a 71 playing off 9 handicap.

The quarter finals were played on Saturday afternoon and the matches were tight with Kristina Lazarevic losing on the 20th hole to Carol Houghton. Also going through to the Sunday morning semi final were Lauren Spray, Emily Cheshire and Caron Harrison.

Some excellent golf was played in the morning semi finals with Emily Cheshire going through in the first match against Carol Houghton. Caron Harrison had a great match against Lauren Spray to come back from 2 down after 16 with 3 birdies in the next 4 holes to eventually gain her place in the final on the twentieth hole.

So the Sunday afternoon final was between Caron and Emily. It was exciting to watch with Emily getting a birdie on the par 3, 7th to go 2 up. Caron, on her home course, fought back with some exceptional golf to win 4 out of the next 5 holes with birdies on both the 9th and 11th. The players continued halving holes until the 16th with Caron winning 3 and 2 and becoming our new and well deserved County Champion. Well done, Caron.

The players selected to go forward to represent the County at the Midlands North Region County Week to be held at Holme Hall Golf Club, Lincolnshire, 6th – 10th June are (in alphabetical order):

Rachel Boulton, Emily Cheshire, Esme Hamilton, Caron Harrison, Carol Houghton, Emma Howie, Emily Lyle, Laura Morris, Sophie Newlove, Glenys Priestley and Lauren Spray. The non travelling reserve is Kristina Lazarevic.

During this week Notts. will play 36 holes a day (18 holes foursomes and 6 singles) against Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire where the best players in midlands golf will be taking part. We shall be defending our national title and would welcome any support as there will be excellent golf to be seen.
