Girls & Intermediate Championships 2018
The 2018 Girls and Intermediate County Championships were held on Sunday 8th July. With the country in the middle of a heatwave, Wollaton Park Golf Club was in glorious condition and the scores lived up to expectation. First out were the Intermediate Section, a strong fields of all single figure handicappers. It was no surprise that the Scratch trophy was won with a low score, although Sophie Newlove’s gross 67 impressed all of us. Sophie’s course record score of 7-under won the Betty Jackson Intermediate Salver and the scratch golfer also took home the Nett prize.
From the oldest competitors to the youngest. There was also tough competition for the 9-hole Championship but it was home player Molly Campbell that walked away victorious. Molly shot a gross 51, nett 26 over 9 holes to win the Championship with her incredible 12 under score. One to watch for the future! There were also impressive performances for Amelia Hogg and Maddison Clarke.
All that was left to be settled was the Nottinghamshire Girls Champion. Amelia Wan shot a gross 79 to almost sweep up in the Girl’s categories. This score of 5 over won Amelia the Roz Simpson Scratch Cup for the Closed Champion, the Apollo Salver for the Open Champion (on countback from Staffs’ Katie Symonds), the U16’s Scratch Trophy presented by Jane England and the U14’s scratch Championship. Winner of the Bridgett Patrick Cup for the Best Nett Closed was Elizabeth Wilson with a 3-under 71, despite several severe handicap cuts in the weeks prior to the Championship. Elizabeth’s gross 96 also won her the Marjorie Petty Bronze Division Scratch Salver. 2nd Gross was picked up by Katie Symonds of Aston Wood, with the best nett prize outside the trophies going to Lexi Williams-Green and second to 2016 Champion Sharna Betteridge.
